The AIDS Youth Challenge Club



The AIDS Challenge Youth Club (ACYC) was founded in may 1991 by a group of young people whose parents or close relatives were living with or had died of AIDS. They found that together they could support and care for each other as away of reducing the trauma and use the experience to change their behavior and prevent HIV infection.

TASO facilitated the establishment of ACYC as a youth specific programme aimed at addressing their sexual reproductive health issues particularly with regard to the current AIDS epidemic.

Mission:
To promote positive behavior change and reduce the spread of HIV in Uganda among the youth, with the youth and for the youth.

Aim:
  • To build a generation of young people with a vision to:
  • Respect themselves sexually or in matters of sexuality.
  • Adopt and promote positive behavior change for preservation of health and life.
  • Adopt and promote positive attitudes towards people living with HIV/AIDS.
Objectives:
  • To equip young people with facts about HIV/STDs and AIDS and encourage them to support one another as regards the psychological and social effects of HIV/AIDS surrounding their families
  • To equip young people with life skills to guard against STD/HIV infection
  • Promotion of HIV/STD prevention practices
  • Promotion of health seeking behaviors and services
Strategies:
  • ACYC fulfils its mandate through;
  • Peer education
  • Training of peer educators
  • Outreach to public through radio, Television and Drama
  • Promotion of dialogue between young people and adults on relationships and sexuality
  • Referrals for professional support.
Activities:
  • Meet regularly during holidays to share experience and ideas and seek correct information on a range of reproductive health issues
  • Engage as groups in extra curriculum activities
  • Provide HIV/AIDS education to young people through holiday workshops and seminars
  • Network with other young people in the struggle against HIV/AIDS
Achievements:
  • Members have been empowered/equipped with Life skills
  • Members have been equipped with rightful information on a range reproductive health issues
  • Tremendous improvement in the communication skills between parents/guardians and caretakers with the youth
Challenges:
  • How to reach out of school youth
  • Un sustainable funding for the youth activities
Future Plans:
  • To strengthen the capacity of youth members through increased training in peer education
  • To liase with government and non government organizations to scale up networking t improve youth friendly service delivery
  • To set-up a Youth oriented Resource Centre
