TASO Tororo

BACKGROUND

TASO Tororo is located in Tororo district. The Center was started in 1989 in St Anthony's hospital, Tororo with relentless efforts of Dr. Joshua Dambisya, who had played a vital role in treating people with the then mysterious HIV/AIDS in the district. The center started its operations in 2 rooms given by the hospital. By 1991, the center's clientele had grown to 827.

Due to the growing number of clients, the center moved to Tororo Hospital in 1992, where they were given an isolated ward that was not in use. This ward was partitioned into five (5) rooms from where TASO Tororo carried out its activities until 1997 when its first office block was constructed on Plot 31, Cox road- right opposite the main hospital. In 2004, another building was constructed to increase on working space at the same location.

TASO Tororo has a catchment area of about 1:5 Million people in the 5 districts of Tororo, Busia, Bugiri and Butaleja. Besides the center also serves people from Kenya in the neighborhood of Uganda - Kenya boarder.

The center is a focal point of HIV/AIDS NGOs in the district, and holds the chair of TONASO (Tororo Network of AIDS Service Organisation) is a member of TOCINET (Tororo Civil Society Network); is ably represented on the DHAC (District HIV/AIDS Committee) and DAT (District AIDS Taskforce).

WAY FORWARD FOR TASO TORORO

  1. The Center intends to embark on a more aggressive mobilisation and advocacy campaign in the drive to fundraise more resources locally.
  2. The Center also intends to identify and encourage other stakeholders to give a hand to TASO programmes in the area of operation especially the districts.
  3. TASO Tororo also intends to be more rational in utilising the available limited resources than ever before.
  4. It shall utilise more locally available resources within communities in a bid to bridge the manpower gap, however this may be tricky when it comes to more technical areas of service delivery.
  5. The Center appeals for more support from other partners especially Donor Agencies to avail TASO Tororo more support since it operates in poverty-stricken catchment areas.
