The AIDS Support Organization (TASO) U. Ltd was founded in 1987 by a group of volunteers who recognized that people with HIV/AIDS need support. Before the founding of TASO there was no direct HIV/AIDS services and as pioneers in the field, TASO naturally took on the challenge of shouldering almost all the problems presented by both the infected and affected. Through its work of; care, prevention and support, TASO has made numerable achievements but it is far more credited for;
Bringing to the fore issues highlighting and advocating for the rights of people living with HIV/AIDS and therefore including them at all the national agenda and forums. Through it vision of ''living positively with HIV/AIDS'', TASO continues to this day to be the leading advocate for both the affected and infected from the local communities through national to international conventions.
Commitment to creating an enabling environment and facilitating accessible provision of quality HIV/AIDS services care to people infected and affected by HIV/AIDS through use of the established TASO Centres, mobile and routine home visits and capacity building of other organizations to scale up service delivery. Today it has served in total 90,000 registered clients since its inception; it has assisted 1865 children in education and apprentiship programmes and provided nutritional support to 28,140 beneficiaries.
TASO has been at the forefront of advocating for equal rights, shared responsibilities and equal opportunities. Through its programmatic activities TASO has encouraged People living with HIV/AIDS to be responsible and the communities to support the needs of both affected and infected. TASO continues to urge for complete protected from stigma and discrimination regardless of ones sero-status.
TASO has attracted, maintained and sustained goodwill at all societal levels towards the fight against HIV/AIDS.
TASO has been leading the efforts in capacity building and training in a range of HIV/AIDS provision services, nationally, regionally and internationally. Over the years TASO has trained individuals, communities and organizations using its extensive field experience and curricula developed through participative approaches and direct partnership with people living with HIV/AIDS who are the direct beneficiaries of all the HIV/AIDS services. Today TASO has trained 743 Counsellors, 214 Community Trainers, 1471 AIDS Community Workers in 38 Parishes
TASO has successfully helped to establish and nurtured other organization including; UNASO (Uganda Network of AIDS Service Organization), KASO (Kumi AIDS Support Organization, POMU (Positive Men Union), AIC (AIDS Information Centre), NACWOLA (National Community for Women Living with HIV/AIDS in Uganda), among others.
TASO has successfully pioneered the Greater Involvement of People with AIDS (GIPA) principles and has led the way in its implementation at all organizational levels.
TASO has established successful partnerships with various Community Based Organizations in different parts of the country.
