TASO Mbarara

Background

In 1989, a group of 8 volunteers initiated TASO-like initiative in Mbarara Hospital in one room that worked as an office, counselling and medical treatment center for persons living with HIV/AIDS. Counselling was mainly done on wards and under trees.

With support from Action AID Uganda and TASO Uganda Limited, the initiative grew to a fully-fledged and semi-autonomous TASO Mbarara Centrein 1991. It is located adjacent to the Mbarara University Teaching Hospital complex on Mulindwa Road, on Mbarara-Kabale road in Mbarara Municipality.

To-date, TASO Mbarara has registered a cumulative total of over 40,000 Clients and the number continues to swell.

The centre employs various categories of staff totaling to 81 staff and a big army of volunteers both at the service center and in communities.

Services provided

The centre runs general clinics on Wednesdays and Friday's every week.

In addition, the center runs 6 out reach clinics in the community in these locations: Ruhooko health unit-Ibanda district every second Tuesday of the month (450 clients) Buteraniro health unit - Rwampara (300 clients), 2nd Thursday of the month, Kigarama-Bushenyi district (800 clients) every last Tuesday and thursday of the month, Katungu-Ishaka-Bushenyi district (400 clients) every 1st Tuesday of the month and Mitooma health unit - Bushenyi district (220 clients) every 3rd Thursday of the month.

The centre provides a range of services to clients. Clients mainly come from districts of Mbarara, Bushenyi, Ntungamo, Kabale, Kasese, Rakai Kyenjojo, Sembabule, and the neighboring countries like; Congo, Rwanda and Tanzania.

The services offered include the following:

HIV/AIDS/STD/FP counselling
Medical treatment including Anti-retroviral Therapy
Social support
Institutional capacity building (ICB)
Advocacy and Networking
Data collection, analysis and dissemination (MIS)
HIV/AIDS Education and Sensitization

Advocacy, networking and collaboration.

The centre has a strong collaboration with the district, NGOs such as AIC, Hospice, FPAU, CBOs and Mbarara University Teaching Hospital and Private practitioners such as Mayanja Memorial and Community Hospital. Radio Maria program, Mbarara Diocese and Radio West.

To-date,TASO Mbarara supports 16 Communities which includeKaberebere, Biharwe, Kamushoko, Nyeihanga, Bwizibwera, Kyagaju, Nyarubungo Ishuuku, kyeizooba, Nyarubungo II, Kabaare, Ngoma, Kagarama, Bunenero, Kyangundu, Bubaare.
