TASO Entebbe

Background

TASO Entebbe Centre has been in existence since November 1991. We started in one room at Entebbe Grade A hospital with the support of Dr. Peter Kizza the Medical Superintendent then, now a consultant Surgeon at Mulago Hospital.

The 1st batch of Counsellors was trained in April - June 1991, In the same year Mrs. Noerine Kaleeba came by and talked to some people individually who later converged at Entebbe Municipal Council and elected members of the committee CEC (currently known as Centre Advisory Committee (CAC).

In 1992 the Centre moved from Entebbe Grade "A" hospital to Portal Road Plot No. 10/12 near St. Theresa primary school, a building rented from Entebbe municipal council.

But a few years later the clients' number shot up and there was again insufficient work space. That is when we approached Entebbe municipal council for any possible land for expansion. In 1998, we were allocated land where the TASO Centre stands now on Plot 15 - 17 Lugard Avenue.

TASO Entebbe was the first TASO Centre to get involved in research. The first study was Pneumoccocol trial study by Dr. Neil French from University of Liverpool School of Tropical medicine (UK) out of which benefits like proper investigations and management of HIV/AIDS were noted. In collaboration with Uganda Virus Research Institute (UVRI)and Medical Research Council (MRC, TASO Entebbe has continued carrying out more Research studies.

In 1995, TASO with USAID support (Consultant. Kelly Bussel from CDC Atlanta Georgia,) introduced the Management Information System (MIS), which was piloted at TASO Entebbe and Lydia Sigirenda (RIP) then secretary of TASO Uganda was the first to be trained.

These are people who are HIV positive and decided to give AIDS a face by going public about their HIV status. they disseminate HIV/AIDS messages to the communities through music,Dance and Drama
  8. Children's Play Centre: In the process of care and support for PHA, it was noted that children who come along with their parents/guardians either because they were sick or they had nobody to remain with at home, got bored. The Centre therefore established a child play Centre where the children spend time playing or "speaking their own language" as they learnt a few things.
