TASO stands for The AIDS Support Organization. It is an indigenous HIV/AIDS service organisation in Uganda founded in 1987 by Noerine Kaleeba and 15 other colleagues some of whom have now passed away due to AIDS.The founding of TASO was based on people that were unified by common experiences faced when encountering HIV/AIDS at a time of high stigma, ignorance and discrimination.

TASO clients want Dr. Noerine Kaleeba recognized as a national hero

TASo Dance: clients entertain guest at the Mulago center AGM on august 28, 2010 The clients of TASO have implored the government to recognize the organization’s founder, Dr. Noerine Kaleeba as a national hero.  The proposal was voiced by ms Gladys Namugenyi, an HIV positive woman during the TASO Mulago service Center’s annual general meeting (AGM) held on Saturday August 28, 2010 at the TASO headquarters in Mulago amidst ululations by other clients and well-wishers.


 Ms Namugenyi who has been receiving treatment, care and support service from TASO for the last ten years argued that many people in Uganda would be dead if TASO was not in existence. Namugenyi said she joined TASO in 2000 after losing hope in life.

President Donates Sh2M to TASO’s Therapeutic Feeding Campaign

Some of the participants who completed the 7KM marathonThe Office of the President of the republic of Uganda, Entebbe State House has donated Sh2,000,000 to TASO through the Entebbe Director’s Marathon, an annual 7Km race that brings together NGOs and government institutions in the municipality. 

The presidential donation was handed over by the acting Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Health, Dr. Asuman Lukwago at this year’s function that was held at Muzinga Park on Saturday August 7, 2010.

The marathon is organized in turns by different organizations and this years’ event was organized by TASO Entebbe service Center with the objective of raising funds for the infant’s therapeutic feeding.

DFID Delegation Visits TASO

A delegation from the UK Department for International Development (DFID) visited TASO’s Head Office in Mulago on Thursday July 29, 2010. Mr. Will Niblett, Catherine Kawamara and Agnes Ndamata formed the DFID delegation that was among other things, carrying out an assessment of the projects that the agency funds overseas.

 
US DHHS meets with ASOS at TASO Offices

A team from the US Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) visited TASO on July 27, 2010 where they met with some of the major Ugandan NGOs, educational and research institutions involved in HIV/AIDS work. The visit was aimed at getting a view of the current health services situation in Kampala and the different ways DHHS can engage with the government of Uganda, NGOs and those educational and research institutions.

 
TASO excites delegates at the AIDS Conference

TASO’s presentation on Tuesday July 20 excited delegates at the XVIII International AIDS Society Conference in Vienna, Austria – as reported by The New Vision of July 22, 2010.

 
HIV persistence still puzzles researchers at the IAS Conference:

Despite the fact that there are now potent combinations of anti-retroviral therapy (ARV), and  have greatly improved the health and substantially reduced mortality rates of people living with HIV and AIDS, current accessible treatments do not eradicate the virus from an infected person.

 
Client Narrates Life Changing Experience in TASO
A fourty-nine-year old TASO client in Soroti district, has narrated how he remarkably regained his health from a  CD4 cell count of below 25 to an astonishing 780. Mr Eyaru George reccounts how he has been moved from a situation of no food, no money, no house to a hopeful life where he now has  plenty of food and is building his house. African Leaders Challenged to Increase Health Funding ahead of AU Summit:

Civil Society Organizations have called upon African Leaders at the AU summit in Kampala to recommit to the Abuja declaration of contributing 15% of national budgets to Health (See full Press statement).
